Catch & Release Fishing
At Niobrara Riverview Retreats, guests can enjoy catch-and-release fishing on our private 38-acre lake and marsh—a true hidden gem for both kids and seasoned anglers.
Our owner, Steve Hansen, spent 23 years as a fisheries biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. When his family purchased this property, he set out to manage it for the highest and best use of fish and wildlife habitat. Today, the ranch includes 236 acres enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), 23 acres of pollinator habitat, and 110 acres in a Wetland Restoration Project (WRP)—all with conservation and sustainability in mind.
The lake itself was developed as part of the WRP, fed by 2,600 gallons per minute of fresh spring water. It has become a haven for waterfowl and migratory birds—including ducks, geese, and even Trumpeter swans. Beneath the surface, you’ll find a healthy fish population: sunfish species like bluegill, pumpkinseed, and hybrids, along with plenty of largemouth bass—plus the occasional northern pike or yellow perch.
By managing the lake as a catch-and-release fishery, Steve has created a trophy-quality experience that’s as fun for kids learning to cast as it is for expert anglers chasing their next big catch. Guests can fish from shore or head out on the water with a paddle boat, canoe, kayak, or 14-ft jon boat.
👉 Please bring your own fishing gear. Not sure what to pack? Just give Steve a call—he’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.
